Google voice rocks!

I have only started playing with Google Voice, but I can already tell that it is going to be very cool. In just a few minutes, I picked my own number (7 0 7 - OKEMO - 7 0 ), and made it ring my home number if you call it. I can even record a different greeting for each person who calls! And have my voicemail emailed to me as text, or sms'ed. I can't wait to check out all the other great features.

Today I learned that free things sometimes work better than expected!

Windows 7 on old hardware.

I helped Uli upgrade her Dell Latitude D800 laptop to Windows 7 Ultimate. I created a bootable USB flash drive, and had no problem installing other than having to remove the flash drive after the installer rebooted the machine. (If the machine reboots from the flash drive instead of the internal hard drive, it will keep repeating the install from the beginning.) Once the install was done, we noticed 4 problems:
1. Wireless adapter not recognized.
2. Graphics adapter not recognized. (Standard VGA used.)
3. Audio hardware not recognized.
4. Cardbus adapter not recognized.

We were able to download the Vista wireless driver on my Mac, put it on a USB stick, and install it on Uli's machine. That got her machine on the internet. The rest of the drivers were found and XP and/or Vista versions were used when the Win7 version could not be found. All is up and running smoothly on her 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM, 60GB HD machine.

Today I learned you can teach an old dog new tricks, but you should have all the old dog's drivers on a USB stick first.

Bacon

Got bacon? Today I learned you can buy a single slice of bacon appetizer for $3 at Peter Luger Steak House in Brooklyn. Lyle gets credit for the photo.

Metal in my Pants

Today I learned that my pants have too much metal for air travel. The hard way.

Gossip

Today I learned the origins of the term "gossip".

Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars.

They were told to 'go sip some ale' and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there'. The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term
'gossip.'

Gouda Cheese

I arrived in Amsterdam yesterday, and today I learned the proper pronunciation for gouda cheese is "How-da", with a very strong and phlemy "H".
